MOTOR INSURANCE BUREAU call in debt collectors. Can anyone advise?

I'd like to add a few things if I may.

He was the named driver on his bosses motor trade insurance and the car was connected to the business. None of the 3rd party clamants were wearing seatbelts which my husband told the MIB investigator a couple of weeks after the accident. The was the very last he heard from the MIB. His address at the time of the accident is still his parents address and no letters have been sent there or to our address-They only live 15 minutes away and they bring his post round if any. Its not something that's been swept under the carpet in the hope it will go away( I quite resent that). This is the first time we've heard anything.
The police were satisfied with his documents. It tooks 6 months to take him to court (surely long enough for anyone to find out if he wasn't insured!)
He's told the whole truth. I was in court with him so I know what happened.
We're off to the CIB and we're going to write to the police,MIB and the debt collectors to see if we can sort it out.
    Thanks again to all involved

Best thing I can say is don't acknowledge he owes the debt in any letters you write or any questions you ask about it.
    Best of luck.

Otters, when the MIB investigator visited, did your husband sign a document authorising MIB to handle the matter on his behalf?
That will have been the authority to collect from you once the claims were settled and this is what is now happening.

Given the amount involved I'd suggest you seek legal advice PDQ.

The fact that an MIB investigator visted your husband a couple of weeks after the accident means they were aware he was not insured very quickly (They would not neccessarily involve the police)

Motortrade Insurance is a hornets nest, motortraders think they can drive any vehicle and especially have a habit of telling their staff they can drive any vehicle including for private use. (MT insurers tend to only cover employees for business use and generally specifically exclude any vehicles owned by the employee).

Due to the quick visit I would suggest it's not a problem with the car not being notified to the MID.

Who was the car owned by ?

Did the business owner have proper premises or did he trade from home ?

    Who was the Insurer ?
