Electrical Goods Warranties

Normally when purchasing electrical appliances, tv's, etc. you are advised you have a 1 year warranty. The supplier will then try to make you purchase extra years cover. However, under EU law, of which the UK is a signed up member, warranties must now cover 2 years on electrical goods. There appears to be little mention of this fact in any documentation received with the goods or advised by the retailer on purchase.

Basically to expand on what the 2 previous posters said for the OP, the EU directive wasnt implemented in full in the UK as our government deemed we already have consumer protection above and beyond what the directive details.
Also with warranties, there are usually lots of terms and conditions about what kind of faults/parts are covered and what are not. In fact the general impression i get is that most users of this forum don't think extended warranties are worth purchasing.
Always remember that if you make a purchase, you do have 6 years to make a claim (5 in scotland) but this is if the fault is inherent rather than simply the result of misuse/wear and tear. And that price is also a factor. After all, you wouldnt expect a £20 microwave to be of the same quality and last as long as a £200 microwave. And your first port of call should always be the retailer as it is with them you have a contract. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

THERE IS NO 'SECRET' EU 2-YEAR GUARANTEE
Allow me to copy and paste this again
There is no EU law giving a two year guarantee. What you refer to is an EU directive requiring member states to implement certain minimum standards in their consumer laws. One of these was to give consumers 2 years in which to request action on faulty or substandard goods. The UK already had better than this in its Sale of Goods Act, and required only minor alterations to bring it into line with the directive. It is not a 2-year warranty, nor is the Sale of Goods Act a 6-year warranty - at least, not in the sense of the warranties we are used to from retailers and manufacturers. All it is, is the period under which you can require retailers to give you a remedy for faulty goods (a remedy can be a repair, a replacement or a partial or full refund)- providing (after 6 months from purchase, at least) you can prove to them that the fault was down to poor manufacturing, and is not something caused by misuse or wear and tear.
