Didn't know where to post, but am hoping this is the most appropriate board.

I want to give my sis something special for christmas. She is seriously ill in hospital and can't have too much stuff really in with her.

So I thought that sponsoring her favourite animal would be a good one to do.

What I would like to know is if anyone has dealt with these people and if they are any good? Or does anyone have any ideas on where else I can sponsor a fox for her?

Any help would be gratefully received!!

Thankyou xx

Don't know that one, but that doesn't mean much. You can check out authenticity at charity commission and intelligetngiving websites, as well as Guidestar.
for more info check out www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk . You'll find me there.

I 'adopted' Etin the orang utan for my dh (he loves them) from the world wildlife foundation (which i think is the same as your link).
    http://www.wwf.org.uk/adoption/index.asp
The promised certificate etc came very quickly and the soft toy was smallish (about 15cms if I remember rightly) but really cute and good quality. My only 'gripe' which is probably rather unfair, is that Etin is obviously just a global name for everyone that wants to adopt an orang utan rather than a truely sponsored individual animal. His picture still appears on the website (and we supposedly 'adopted' him more than 6 months ago). I also wonder how much money actually goes to supporting the animal as by the time they have provided the toy, certificate and postage etc there can't be much left over!

Years ago we sponsored a child in Rwanda and used to get regular updates, photos and letters from 'our' child at least twice per year until he grew up. We could write back to him and even send him Christmas gifts. We did that through Tear Fund and it was really rewarding for us to have that contact. Of course, I know that in reality the charity pools all the donations for sponsorship, but it feels much more individual. How would your sister feel about you sponsoring a child for her rather than an animal? If it is still the same system you can choose the sex, approximate age and location of the child you would like to sponsor but it is more expensive that WWF.

One other thought I had was that I am currently involved in helping to check shoe boxes for the 'Samaritans Purse' the charity that sends decorated shoe boxes of toys, sweets, warm gloves etc to children in countries where they would usually get nothing for Christmas. Schools, clubs and individuals donate these shoe boxes full of things and personally i get a great deal of fun finding small gifts to pack and imagining the joy of the child who will receive them. Have a look at their website if you're not familiar with the concept. Depending on your sister's illness you could pack a box in her name and then take it to show her all the little gifts before taking it to your nearest drop off point (see website for details).
Anyway... good luck with whatever you decide:j

    Thanks for that!!

I think sponsoring a child would be out for the moment tho as the treatment she is getting will most likely mean she will not be able to have the child she wants and I think it will be a bit too upsetting to ask right at the beginning of a treatment that can make her sterile. But it is one for the future when she is more used to the idea. Thankyou!!

Sorry to hear your sister is seriously ill Bethom, I hope she feels better soon. I don't know a massive amount about sponsoring animals but lots of local animal charities let you adopt an actual animal, there is a sanctuary near us that does that. You can then visit the animal if you like.

It's gonna be a long battle for her but we are doing everything we can to help her through!!

That has just sparked my memory that we have visited somewhere this year that allows you to sponsor their animals. Now to get the cogs moving into remembering the name of the place!!

I love orangutans and adopt one via the sanctuary Monkey World (https://www.monkeyworld.co.uk). You can choose the one you want (as their 'Monkey Business' programme is on TV constantly it's not hard to choose one you like!). You get a photo and a year's entrance free. I don't live near them (Dorset), but still get my adoption fee back in free visits. It's really cool when you visit 'cause you end up standing around with complete strangers talking about which one you have adopted!
