Confused about Child & Partner tax

Are you feeling a bit less confused now?
Just to make sure
Income tax - what is deducted off your paypacket. Not effected at all by your relationship/family arrangements.
Tax credits - a form of benefit - these are worked out according to your circumstances and it is essential that you inform the Tax Credit office of any changes. They are called 'Tax Credits' to give them a nice 'non-benefit' type name, but they aren't really anything to do with tax.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
mrs manda...he's received the benefit ( train pass) for the past 27 years, and has always paid the tax on it throughout the year.
i looked at his tax code letter myself and it says they are recovering a tax underpayment of £79 ( which they said they had already told him about, but they havent). i understand that changing his tax code will recoup this. what i dont understand is that he had a cheque in november from HMRC for £20 as they said he'd overpaid!
is it worth pursueing or do they deal with under/overpayments seperately? what i mean is, if he had overpaid one year is a refund generated and then they look at the next year?0 -

Yes - Each financial year is judged separately so it's perfectly possible to get a refund for 2009/10 and an unpayment request for 2010/11.
If you don't think the tax codes are correct you can contact the HMRC and ask for more details.0
