a message from Nokia's CEO to staff

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12403466

Oh dear. Describes their market position as being a burning platform.

Kind of highlights also how quickly markets can change. Nokia seemed to be viewed as unassailable 3 years ago.

Fascinating to see is perspective.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Good to see a CEO taking a frank tone, instead of the usual 'it's all ok' blandishments that usually come out.

Nokia are the Microsoft of the mobile phone world. They began the innovation, but soon found themselves out innovated by Apple. As did Microsoft.

In particular, he said, the firm had been caught off guard
If it took that long to realise Nokia's Symbian is crap, then Nokia deserves this situation. Nokia phones were excellent in the past. But none of their Symbian based smartphones can compete with either iPhone or Android phones.
Mr Wood said this could involve using Android or Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating systems.

Don't make the mistake again! Windows mobile is another dead horse. Go for Android instead.

Microsoft failed to see rise of web based apps. They thought people will continue to user desktop based apps. So M$ did not invest enough on web technology to stay ahead of the pack. But Google saw an opportunity and became #1

AFAIK the new CEO is ex-Microsoft, so I guess he can't take a dump on Windows Mobile 7

Symbian was not at all bad when it came out but for whatever reason (no doubt nokia proprietary) it did not gain the necessary app library to become a hit.

Android has caught on as it was given away free - anyone yet know how google intend to monetise this largesse? I presume it is to do with tying users in to the whole google product suite.

Nokia could have achieved dominance by giving away symbian but there was no leverage for them in doing so.
    I think....
  • Android phones are awesome I'd never have a windows phone or any other phone again.

My 4 year old symbian nokia never froze, ran out of memory or broke, and it could play flash on websites - my 2 month old zte does all of these except the flash...
    I think....
  • Why didn't he send all his staff a text message. Or Twitter. On their mobile phones?

Why do we still tolerate split infinitives in BBC articles?
  • I write software for mobile devices and on balance I think, at least from a business point of view, Windows mobile and now phone 7 offer a lot of advantages over their competition. Their marketing for the mass public market has been woeful though.
  • my experience of windows devices has been poor, unless you are anti-apple
The best gadget out there is and for the forseeable future will be the iphone.

it made me laugh last year when motorola made a statement saying they had built an i-phone rival, unfortunately apple had launched a Iphone v2, then a 3GS and the Iphone 4 was imminent, after there original iphone
