Make sure you use an ethernet cable to connect to your modem, you cannot do the following with wireless in this mode, then reboot your computer into safe mode with networking, then run the test. If you get much higher figures then anti virus etc may be slowing it down.0

What?? even at the low end of Wireless G you should get 10MbpsMake sure you use an ethernet cable to connect to your modem, you cannot do the following with wireless in this mode, then reboot your computer into safe mode with networking, then run the test. in the environs of your house , my best speed is 6+mbps and this is my measure now using wireless (and someone is also watching streaming elsewhere) Oh also I use Norton Antivirus 2011 so that ain't gonna slow it down either .
Marmalize I would think that you are getting either
Throttled by your ISP... more likely

Wireless can run very slowly if there is local interference or a low strength connection - data errors mean packets have to be retransmitted.0 -

oooh thats interesting...thanks...
the low speedtest was before midnight ...the normal one after so,if i am reading this right...
We moderate the total volume of file sharing traffic on our network between 5pm and midnight on weekdays and midday and midnight on weekends. This policy, which applies to all broadband packages, is restricted to Peer to Peer ("P2P") applications and Newsgroups (which are commonly used to distribute large amounts of data)
if there are lots of people downloading then my speed will be reduced?...or...i must have downloaded my limit (Don't think i did though) and have been 'punished'...
i will check today as i am going to be downloading over that limit today(i will see what happens to my speed).
am using wireless bb via cable box not phone line ..0 -
Start by rebooting the cable modem and router (in that sequence), that's always the first port of call with any VM cable problems. No free lunch, and no free laptop

I have noticed fluctuating speed on the Virgin Network too. Like the OP I ran a speedtest and got around 2 Megs. Again thinking that was a bit wierd, ran it again about an hour later and got around 9 1/2 megs, the norm."...IT'S FRUITY!"0

I am completely unimpressed with Speedtest.net - after it once told me my download speed was 54 Mbps - on a 10 Mbps cable line! The ThinkBroadband speed tester gives me ~9.4 Mbps, which I do believe, at non-peak times and maybe about half that at peak times. Network congestion...0

I agree speedtest is all over the place sometimes but for now, mine seems quite accurate (yes, I am on a 50meg line
:):) ).
