Alternative to vm player

Ive downloaded VM player to install vista but it just freezes when trying to install, can anyone recommend an alternative to vm player if it decides to freeze.

I tend to use VirtualBox but have you tried right click and run as administratior - assuming of course it's Vista or 7 you are installing on.

its a windows 7 pc and im trying to install vista on the vm machine

re what you said about administrator do you mean do that when in vm player

No, I thought initially that the vm player install was freezing.

Are you installing from a DVD, as it may be quicker and more stable to mount an ISO image, and install from that.

well im not sure, the bit where it freezes is where the screen has them series of blocks to show the progress of the install

yes its a dvd,. ok ill try iso

I gave it another try and vista is installed and im currently using it

Total Media Player is the one I use but I'm on XP but assume should be OK.

vm is working so far but i might try it if vm doesnt work at some point

I use VMware Player every day, and often have a Windows XP and a Linux VM up and running simultaneously on my Windows 7 32-bit machine.

The advantage of virtualbox over some virtualisation systems is that aside from being free for creation as well as playing, it works on non-premium Windows too. For instance the official VirtualPC software will not install on vista home premium, but virtualbox does just fine. I use it a lot for quickly starting up a LAMP stack (linux/apache/mysql/php) to test server software (drupal, etc). Have a look at turnkey linux, which has a load of precreated linux images with applications preconfigurec, sometimes even as a VM virtual hard drive ready to connect to!

im not sure linux would work for what i want it for, ive got a game that works in xp fine but on windows 7 it doesnt work and it works on vista under vm player
