Im hoping someone can help me out - i bought a car and the owner has just had the private numberplate back ( was the original agreement) and has been to the dvla with all the relevant paperwork etc and now said they will come round with the cars original plates and the new log book tax etc will be here within 7 days - my concern is when i rang the insurance last week and asked them about this they said they can sort out the insurance with the new reg when we have the log book back?
SO.. if the private plates are removed tommorow and the originals replaced BUT the log book is not here - where do i stand? can i drive the car as the dvla have transfered plates but the insurance needs the log book - also the tax disc will read different to the car reg plates?? argghhhh sorry to go on but im a little lost and just wish the seller had sorted the plates before we purchased it!!!

The DVLA should give you a replacement tax disc and once the log book is there and the DVLA database is updated then the insurance will cover the new plate, you will still be insured under the old plate number though so there shouldnt be any insurance problems during the overlap.0

Many thanks - does that mean i should not let the seller have back his private plates until the log book comes through - i know hes keen to have them back - but tuff if it means waiting a few days!0 -
Most Insurers will allow you to cover the car on the chassis number whilst the transfer is going through as obviously the chassis number does not change0

You shouldn't wait for the V5 to come through from Swansea. Even when you're buying a new car there is a delay of up to 4 weeks before it comes through.moomoominx wrote: »Many thanks - does that mean i should not let the seller have back his private plates until the log book comes through - i know hes keen to have them back - but tuff if it means waiting a few days!
Reg transfers are done at LVLO (DVLA local offices) and the guy should bring the paperwork (inc the new tax disc mentioned above). Provided he does you should change the reg over ASAP and get your insurer to issue cover for the changed number. Although it can be a bit hit and miss when the actual physical change-over takes place the legal transfer happens when the LVLO accept the transfer and issue the new tax disc etc.0 -
many thanks for the advice - will all be sorted later - cheers0
