We've already started fishless cycling using biomature, so it'll be a while yet until we get some fish. We used an online calculator to determine how many fish but judging from your comments it'd still overfill?! Not sure what fish we want now, what would you recommend? We know we want some shrimp.

Good that you are at least doing some research into what is best.Try asking on Practical Fishkeeping.Tell them your set up and ask what fish would be ok.I will keep popping in,as I'm a member on there and help you out.

You wont get many fish in a 20 ltr tank. A small shoal of neon 4 to 5 and properly about your lot. You need to wait a good while before getting shrimp as they need a good amount of bio material for them to feed on. Even with my 60ltr set up I've been unable to keep shrimp.

You also need some ammonia and tester to kit to check that your tank is ready for fish research fish-less cycling.

They were probably long armed shrimp, they are bad for doing this. They would be good in a species tank

Cherry shrimp would be the way to go in a small community tank. If the tank was bigger armoured shrimp would be a great addition. They are quite big but incapable of hurting anything. I have 7 of these and they are great to watch.

I have been keeping fish for 35 years now, started with coldwater, tropical and now have Reef tank and malawi cichlids.

The best bit of advice I can give you is to find a decent supplier (easier said than done) or join a good forum and learn from experienced fishkeepers and do your research and have some patience. Too many people walk into a shop, buy an aquarium, listen to the shop and their sales patter and within weeks have a fully stocked tank. It doesn't work like that, you need to build up and stock slowly and make sure your tank is fully cycled before adding any fish. Also make sure you test the water regularly.

If you go for goldfish, they are very, very messy fish, so you will need adequate filtration.
