Fresh whole sardines

I picked up some cheap whole (gutted) sardines today and realised I don't have a clue what to do with them!

I've had a search on here, but can't easily find anything.

So please, your best easiest recipe for me would be great.

Jamie did them the other day, much as I have. Don't worry about the exact flavourings (or the other recipes lol), just a big squeeze of lemon is good

I just stick them on a griddle until the flesh is cooked then get a large chunk of french bread and pick of the lovely sardineness! My favourite fish!

I love fresh sardines. Grilled with a little seasalt, black pepper, and perhaps a squeeze of lemon. Bliss!

Grill until just cooked, with a few herbs and some lemon juice. Make a tart side salad (tomato for example) and eat. Quite strong tasting, so you do not need a lot.

Any left over "pot". mash them up with flavourings and put in a pot. Cover with melted butter.

That's all really great thanks. I used a couple of lemons I grew myself and grated the skins onto the sardines and squeezed the juice over them, cooked in the oven for a while they were lovely.

The rest of the family complained bitterly about the bones though. I think I'll try mackerel next time.

Right, I bought these sardines in tesco

    http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=265770718

they are frozen whole, not gutted or anything.

we're defrosting them for tonights tea, BUT do i need to gut them or whatever, i wanted to do them with a spicy sort of paste on them which i will whizz up and flavoured couscous

but im on a diet so want as little oil involved as possible and we havent got a fancy grill or char grill pan or anything

whats best to do with them and how do i prepare them??

    Hi puddy,

There are a couple of links I've used before that helped me with gutting sardines here and here

Normally I just grill them with lemon juice but there are more ideas on this thread:Fresh whole sardines

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.
