If you share gates to a property can you do anything legally to make sure that the other owner closes them for security and safety reasons.

You could buy a 'Please close the gate' sign, but you'd need permission from the other owner to put it on the gate. Youcould, however, put it on the fence (your side) beside the gate.

I really doubt if you could get a judge to serve an order on the other owner to close the gate. And if you could, would it be worth the cost?

Possibly (although possibly not) but its almost certainly going to cost you an arm and a leg in legal fees, and in the process create a definite neighbour dispute that you'd have to disclose if you sold the property in the future. On that basis its never going to be worth doing. You need to find a practical solution even if that's just checking its shut before you let the kids/dogs etc out.

What is the layout/problem ? Is it from your front or rear garden that you have security concerns ? The cars on the drive, or kids/animals safety?

Could another secondary fence, from gate to corner of your house, or along rear of house to neighbours fence, be an alternative?

To be honest, anything that relies on human intervention has the ability to be forgotten/overlooked. What if legal penalties were put in place - which would have to apply to all parties in fairness - then you forgot and got the penalty?! Miffed or what!?

If you want 100% security, its going to need a technological solution - electronic auto-closing/remote opening - are you prepared to spend for that?
