Aver Aspire One

I have acquired the above notebook but the error message just after I power it on is reading "no bootable device".

I have checked bios settings for boot options - there is nothing in the USB slots or anything like that.

I purchased a USB to IDE cable to try and run erd from disk but this has no effect.

Do I need to re-install windows xp on the notebook again? Where can I purchase windows xp at a resonable price?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

You don't say how you acquired it, but could it be that there is no OS on there? Was the HDD wiped by the previous owner?

If that's the case you will need to install an OS, either from a usb drive or an external DVD drive. Doesn't have to be Windows XP though. You could go for Windows 7 or one of the many flavours of linux.
  • A friend gave it to me as he had no use for it anymore.

He said it was working ok until he switched it on and the error message is "no bootable device - insert boot device then press any key"

    Wot u think?

check the hard drive or Solid state drive is in place. The hatch is usualy underneath held in with a couple of screws. If that doesn't work you can try to reinstall Linux or Windows if you have a disk.

I would first of all download a free OS (something like Ubuntu). Installing that will at least tell you whether you have a software problem or a hardware problem. No point in paying out for Windows if you don't know whether it will work.

If you can get it up and running with ubuntu you can always buy a copy of windows at that point if you prefer. I wouldn't go for XP, I'd go for Windows 7. Runs fine on my Acer Aspire One and a much nicer OS than XP.

Check the bottom of the netbook to see if there's a windows COA sticker with a serial number, if there is and you can borrow a windows disc and external dvd drive off someone you could try reinstalling windows, the hard drive could've died though.
