These instructions don't work, how do I type this symbol, do I need to have some special characters loaded? (Using Win 98 SE)

Worked for me, although that's on XP.

Ensure Num Lock selected, hold down Alt and at the same time press +225 (on keypad), ß appears on release of Alt key.

Both codes also worked for me (using xp).

If you have MS Word, go to Insert, then Symbols and you should find the symbol there. Once you have highlighted the one you want, it should show you the shortcut key code at the bottom.

  • Alt + 0223 works for me - it takes a few seconds to come up though. Alternatively, if you're using Word, go to Insert > Symbol. Select Latin -1 as the subset, and double-click the symbol you want (this one is second row down, one from right.) In this window, you can also assign a new shortcut to this symbol. If you're trying to enter this symbol in another program, it may be more complicated.

ß right I see, You have to press
    'ALT' (HOLD IT)
    '+'
    '0'
    '2'
    '2'
    '3'

I was not pressing the + before

No, the + in the Alt+ convention doesn't mean press the + key. It means press Alt, keep it pressed down and press the other key(s) indicated and then release the Alt key. Same with Ctrl+.

Do you have a separate numeric keypad or one built in to the other keys?

Doh, I didn't realise that! It still works even if you do press the '+'!

Another method in Word is Ctrl-shift-& (all together), release then press 's', but that doesn't work in PowerPoint, email etc.

The Alt + 225 is the best - works in all applications.
