Hi
Wonder if anyone can recommend me any good deals to replace my ancient Dell desktop. The motherboard has gone and isn't worth repairing so i am after a replacement base unit
Already have the monitor, keyboard, mouse & printer to use on new system, but nothing from old base unit is re-usable. Also have retail copy of XP home, but not against something that comes with Windows 7
PC would be used for kids really, so mainly browsing & MS Office 2003. Might use the odd educational cd/game but nothing that would need high spec pc.
thanks

Absolutely any base unit will do the tasks you mention, so what's your budget? Economy option would be a 2nd user PC which would be well under £100 for an older system running XP, or you would be spending £300 upwards for a new one with W7.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Sorry forgot about my budget
Happy to spend upto £300 - £350 to get something with Windows 7, or bit cheaper if i use my copy of XP.
thanks0 -
I'd go for a Dell Inspiron then.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thanks
Is that the best option at the moment in terms of cost & what you get?

No, not at all. It's just the one I happen to think is OK. Ask 10 people which desktop PC is best and you will get 10 different answers. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Use your XP - £176 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/253549
Win7 - £255 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/239770
Don't forget that Dell use the cheapest components they can get away with and deliberately make systems with very limited upgrade options.0 -
Thanks
I'll look at those 2 as well0 -
the old hard disk will work in a caddy. motherboard completely dead?!!

the old hard disk will work in a caddy. motherboard completely dead?
Yes, its one of the old Dell GX270's with the known capacitor problem on the boards. I was using it until it died, but unfortunately it did last week well and truly
Hard disks a really old 40gb IDE drive with very little space left on it, so probably not worth it as i'd need more storage anyway.
Got it for nothing and its done well for past 4 years, but time to upgrade i think0
