using cold water in washing machine

Options
My friend recently stayed with me from Australia. Over there, they are encouraged to use cold water to wash clothes in. Their washing powders are designed to dissolve in cold water. She washed her clothes in my machine on a cold wash and they were all perfectly clean. We dont have special powders here so she used washing liquid. I've been doing it ever since and hopefully will save a stack of cash in heating bills. I dont use any expensive washing liquid, just SmartPrice biological from ASDA. I have to admit that I do use a 30 degree wash for the whites, but I'm still experimenting. DOnt you think the government should be encourage this to be developed rather than penalizing us for being wastefull, or taxing us for things out of our control.?

I have a quickwash function on my machine which basically washes without heating the water. I use this most of the time and use washing powder tablets which dissolve fine. I do sometimes wash bedding or towels at a higher temperature, or stuff thats really really dirty but everyday stuff I do on quickwash, takes about 40 minutes and comes out perfectly clean.

I use the quick wash. 1/2 an hour, so much quicker aswell. Also the 1 hour one if they need it. No specific instructions in my handbook/manual apart from using smaller load (I don't overload anyway) and any lightly soiled items, I use the sports wash for the moto x gear etc. My new one doesn't even have hot water inlet.
One day I might be more organised...........
