Beware Tax Credits and Overpayments

I note today that Martin is proclaiming, "tell them", "tell them", "tell them" when your circumstances change. Whole heartedly agree but my advice is to always get confirmation that they have received your changes.
We ended up with an £8000 overpayment over three years despite telling them every step of the way when our circumstances changed. We argued over 2 years, invplved our MP the ombudsman and various other agencies but to no avail. The tax office claimed that they were unaware of our changes and that it was down to us to realise we were being overpaid.
We received money like many others and the assumption is that if you have told them of your situation and updated them accordingly, that the money they give you is correct! Never assume!!
We are paying the money back and there is no recourse. I paid them £2000 to settle one overpayment which despite my protestations turned out to be correct but, unfairly in my opinion .... My partner and I got together in the September but when the calculations were made they took my then salary for the whole of the tax year from April despite the fact that we only got together in the September!! Be warned.
The remaining £6000 is being paid back over 5 years at £100 a month. On the plus side, if there is one, they were very flexible on the repayment time and amount to be paid and it is free of interest!!
Never again!!
