Magnetic door frames

I live in a 50's council flat. The door frames and window frames are metal.
I have noticed yesterday that all door and window frames are magnetic (will hold loads of fridge magnets)
Is this normal?

It's the fridge magnets that are magnetic, not the frames.The fridge magnets will adhere most metals, but not aluminium as far as I know. If you still think that the frames are magnetic, try putting a teaspoon or other metal object on them (without a magnet attatched) and see if that sticks. I doubt it will though.

I can't believe the OP thought that fridge doors must be magnetic if fridge magnets stuck to them....

2 years ago the magnets didn't stick to the door frames - I ended up using blue tack. Now they do stick to the door frames, I was confused.
They DO NOT stick to my fridge - its got a plastic front.
Try explaining to an autistic person (my son) that fridge magnets do not stick to a fridge !! But they do to a door frame.
Now he wants to know why they aren't called door frame magnets!!!!

Does he understand the concept of time / history / years gone by?

You could explain that many many years ago (even before mum was born), fridges were made of metal.

Magnets attach themselves to metal objects.

And all those years ago, the only items in the house made of metal were fridges (not entrirely true I know) window and door frames were wood so magnets wouldn't stick to them, magnets would only stick to fridges and so they were called fridge magnets.

But we got clever at making other things out of metal so magnets stick to them as well now but as the magnets were always called fridge magnets, the name didn't change.

They don't stick to fridges now because fridges are made of plastic and magnets don't stick to plastic.

Yes it is a very silly situation but people are silly.

Thank you, after listening to 'I am the Eggman' (Dr Robotnik's theme) 137 times in a row my I think my brain has disengaged from reality and I really couldn't think.

google for crittall windows and you will see why magnets stick to those frames.

they were very popular at one time. certainly in the SE and london area.

I know all about Crittall windows :eek:, I have even read the man's autobiography,(probably one of the few people on the planet who have and I own a signed copy! :A) and as I sit here shivering with the condensation running down the windows and the black mould creeping up, I HATE them :mad:. One day (when pigs fly probably) the council will replace them, but at the moment I have 60 year old 2mm glass and flipping awful metal window frames.
