Mine ran out for my two - I would have taken them early but was told to wait & then couldn't get there at that specific time so they have missed it (I didn't want to pay for going back to beginning then). Am hoping they don't get sick & will consider restarting next year - booster was due in July 2011

They won't get sick, studies in the USA have shown that the full course of vaccinations when puppies/kittens may well last the lifetime of the animal... your quoteinteresting that dogs & cats are vaccinated annually but people not?
Rip off? You decideAlways try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
See I only get my lad vaccinated every three years - lepto yearly.
My first vet didnt like the idea and I had to sign a disclaimer but my vet here ( and the vet for my last dog) are both more then happy.0 -

I may be misunderstanding you-you have the lepto vacc annually? Then you are vaccinating annually. Most dog vaccs now have 3 year licenses for DHP, but only 1 year for lepto. We do DHP every 3 years but a lepto booster yearly. Saying you only have your dog vaccinated every 3 years is misleading though, and could lead to misunderstandings.
Our vacc manufacturer says we have about 3months grace if they go overdue on vacc, so a lepto lasts up to 15months-but that is obviously for lepto only-a single DHP will get an adult dog protected again-as long as it responds to vaccines. So if a dog is more than 3mo overdue they get a DHPL then a lepto 2 weeks later to get them fully protected again0 -

Not really as we don't vaccinate humans against distemper, parvo or cat flu. Humans get annual flu shots and the only vaccine that we give to humans, cats & dogs is Rabies and each species has a 3 year duration. You can't compare parvo to tetanus as the diseases and causes are completely different.0 -

Rip off? You decide
Years ago my longest living cat had no vaccinations until she was about 15yrs old. She lived to 21 & was put down due to being in a poor condition: deaf, not cleaning herself, bad kidneys and heart - continually going off her food - going in/out of vets. She wore a flea collar & had termly baths (baths were Mum's idea as she wasn't happy that Lucy slept on my bed). Lucy had the run of a house & front & back garden & had quite a nice life.
Years later I find myself in a flat with 1 ex-rescue cat (who I got as a teenager - nearly cat) vet says he had cat flu & this explains his runny eye/ears sometimes - he hunts. The other cat I had from 6 weeks old. Am told flea collars don't work & that annual vaccs are essential - much more expensive pet ownership. Anyways they are both 9 & 10 yrs old & mostly housecats - they missed their booster this summer so I may leave it for a year or so & start again - less puncturing for them I guess. Only thing is if they need to go elsewhere than parents house (where they stay if I go on holiday).0 -

Yes but you said you only get your lad vaccinated every 3 years, which you don't-its every year, just not against every disease every year.. Sorry it it seems I am having a go, I just wanted to point out that the vaccine is every year, just the components change
We don't know that the OP's vet is not following data sheet guidelines of DHPL/L/L 3 yearly cycle (most are now) but that the OP is overdue and needing a double lepto dose to get immunity back up if they are more than a couple months late.0 -
Hi
as a general rule with 3 months is fine- However if you wish to start again then do so as this is not harmful. This May is vaccination month- where you only pay for the price of a booster to restart the vac course- thus making it half price- find out if you surgery is doing this or visit the vaccination month website- just google it (intervet SP are running it) Not all practices are joined up yet so just because your practice is not registered at the moment call them first to double check!0 -
Hi
We got a dog (Zena) from a rescue centre in July. She is a lab cross and came in from Cyprus with the Cyprus pet passport. Some of the passport is confusing me. Zena is our first dog. The rescue centre wasn't particularly helpful in describing what we needed to do in terms of the pet passport. We dont want to take Zena abroad for at least a few years. I know / can work the following out from the passport -- she was microchipped on 9/8/10 in the neck
- she has had 2 rabies vaccinartions, one from 9/8/10 to 30/8/10 and one 30/8/10 to 30/08/11. This is therefore out of date.
- the rabies serological test (blood test?) was signed, dated and stamped in Cyprus on 12/1/11
- zena has had tick treatment called herial frait line combo(???) on 11/6/11
- zena has had echinococcus(???) treatment called bayer draital plus (??) on 11/6/11
- zena has had vanguard cpv-lepto and vanguard da2pi which is valid from 2/10/10 to 23/10/10
- nobivac dhppi and nobivac lepto which is valid from 26/10/10 to 26/10/11
- she has also been neutered but the last page of the passport does not have any details on this
Any advice welcome0
