second hand car!

hi my mates son 22 bit niave , bought a second hand car in jan, paid 2000,cash in a private sale ---- now here come the problem the owner sent off the log book and the lad has the keepers part , now the dvla , have asked the lad for name and adress of previous owner which he doesnt have ,is this usual or is there something fishy about this sale , bless him hes worried sick . please any advice would be great

Probably checking the seller was the registered keeper. Was it taxed when he bought it?
