I use a franking machine and do not have any problem at my post office. If I need proof of postage I have to wait in line to get them done. I think your post office is just being a jobs worth. Yes they do get paid for processing any mail even prepaid, smart stamp and franked.

Your post makes no sense. What he's saying is he doesn't want to wait in line. It's the post office worker who wants that.
And local post offices no longer receive an allowance for franked mail. It used to be a lump sum per annum for fringe services. That's gone. If they want to be paid dfor online postage, they have to be wieghed and processed. Part of that payment is checking the correct amount has been paid. Hence the having to queue.

It makes sense to me - no I don't have to wait in line, but if i want proof of postage then yes I have to. And for the bit about the post office getting paid I was not aware of that although they keep yammering at me about losing money from prepaid postages.

Franked mail is totally different. And pre paid doesn't give the same profit as selling postage. The OP was asking why he got that response from this Post Office. The answer is they were doing it the correct way, not being "jobsworths".
You also use the word yammering. What they are trying to do is point out why so many offices have shut down. Lack of revenue mainly. Many people are unaware of how these places are funded. Royal Mail have managed to con people in to using their own form of stamps, at no discount and no real extra convenience, then expecting a Post Office to process them at a lesser profit.
I owned one up to three years ago. Most of my big ebayers dropped their packets off with a cash sum or blank cheque. I did the postage at quiet times. That worked out well for all concerned.
One only refused, and was sent elsewhere.

I hear this argument about POs going out of business, but the only reason I had to start using Smarstamps (and pay for the privilege) is that at my local PO they were a pain in the axx...

If they shut and they lose their jobs they only have themselves to blame, I'm sure I'm not the only business they have driven away.

Snap, the new manager at my is a right fire dragon hence moving to a newer one closer to home.

    Spot on.
It's up to you whether you want a Certificate of posting or not.
If something i'm posting has a value of say £3.99......i sure as hell don't wanna stand in a queue behind 15 people, just to get a C.O.P for that! ;)

At first, the woman at my local P.O counter did the same thing what the OP said (and wanted me to wait for a C.O.P), but she's fine NOW about me leaving packages at the side without standing in the queue. Go figure.
  • It is right that a parcel should be processed when you take it to the post office that is what you are taught in your training its how the post office make their money, when you send a parcel the post office concerned gets paid per label if you just drop your parcel off with prepaid postage that post office don't get paid so therefore they want to put the parcel through the system so they get a little bit of money back .....

Try and remember we are only trying to do our job... we are the first ones you have a go at when your parcels arn't delivered and the first ones to get moaned at for trying to do our jobs properly by processing the parcels.

Sorry, but I disagree. Forcing people to queue so that you can process the parcel and make a bit of money, when prepaid is used to speed things up, it's not doing 'our jobs properly', but adding an unnecessary step just to get commission. I can see why a PO would want to do that, but that's not how the system is supposed to work.

If POs made a small effort to work with ebay sellers and small businesses in their area, they would make more money and have a more secure future. Many people would be more than willing to support their local PO, given the chance.

Isn't that what people are in business for... to make some money... shall we give away a pound to every customer too

Surely u sell on ebay to make some money and I would imagine you do the best you can and follow the ebay guidelines so you make more money well the poor guys at the post office are also only following the post office guidelines

You are not forced to queue you can take them to your local sorting office if you just want to drop them off

Maybe if a few ebay sellers would give the chaps a break at the post office then you would receive a better service (as I have to be honest they are the worst customers of all)
