I am going to lose my job at some point in the near future.
If I am made redundant can I claim JSA?
If I am married and my dh is working does this make a difference. he has some savings but I have none.
also we have 2 children under 7 and our earnings will be under 20k will we get tax credits. when I do the calculation is doesn't ask how much my dh earns?
I am starting to worry a bit now as I don't want to put too much strain on my dh's by asking for money all the time!!
I am trying to search for the info but so far I'm just confussed

What you get depends on whether you've paid enough national insurance in the relevant tax years.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Hiya,
Your best option is to go and get some advice from your local benefits advice centre before the event happens because then you will be more prepared for the event and you can develop a plan of action early.

You'd be entitled to contribution based JSA for 6 months. It doesn't matter what savings / DH's income is.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Youre married with a family and you have separate savings accounts.
Its not a case of asking him for money all the time, if he is the only earner then he has to support you and the children.
Sorry, dont mean to judge but you young uns have a different way of going on these days. Not you personally but its no wonder there are so many divorces.
My OH and I have been married coming up 43 years (Im not really that old, I was a child bride:D), everything goes either into the current account, anything left goes into the savings account. We want to buy something, we buy it, within reason.
In all honesty, we have never argued about money no matter who is earning what.
Stop worrying about redundancy until you are sure,
Are you aware of you rights financially regarding redundancy.
Good luck and I do hope you keep your job.

My parents have been married for over 40 years but still have some separate savings accounts, although in their case they seem to favour my mum rather than my dad!

Its the same in our house, my husband isnt very good with money so we agreed before we married that I would look after the savings, he has a savings account with a few hundred in it but otherwise I look after our money and he wouldnt even have a clue about how much or where it is because we totally trust each other.
He also dosnt have a clue about our bills etc. either because the same is true, I look after everything to do with finances good and bad.
But all our money has always been ours, not mine nor his.0 -
If you are made redundant you should get some redundancy pay, any holiday pay due. Make sure the proper procedures are followed. Check with your union?
Then you can claim contribution based Job Seekers Allowance, based, as the name implies, on your own contributions. As you have worked for the past 10 yrs there shouldn't be any problem over this, unless you were earning too little to have to pay NI in the last couple of years.
CbJSA lasts 6 months, if required. It is not means-tested.
After that, some people continue to get JSA but it is income based IBJSA. This is means-tested and they look at the income of the whole household, sincluding savings, so no, you won't get it because of your OH's employment income.
You can claim Tax Credits from HMRC. This will be a joint claim, based on household income, any child care costs etc. There are two sorts, Working Tax Credits, and Child Tax Credits, with different qualifying methods. Complicated but you make one claim. Awarded for a year, they are slow to take account of changes of circumstances ( which you must keep them informed about) and so some people end up with over- or underpayments.
Your local CAB can help you check your redundancy pay is correct ( and procedures) and help with any problems, also they can do a calculation for Tax Credits and advise on anything else you may be entitled to when/if the time comes.
For what it's worth, my OH and I keep our savings separate too!0 -
