Yes you will have to stop your IB claim first.

    No, no you won't.

Assuming the OP is single & sick more than 12 months ... the Income Support calculation "could" be as follows :-

    Personal Allowance - £65.45
    Disability Premium - £28.00
    Carer Premium - £30.05
Total £123.50 This is the "applicable amount", the minimum the law says you need to live on.

deduct from that the IB - £91.40

which leaves an Income Support balance payable of £32.10 pw.

Incapacity Benefit & Carer's Allowance overlap, which means you only continue to receive IB ... and instead of being paid Carer's Allowance, they grant you "underlying entitlement" to Carer's Allowance, which allows you to get the Carer Premium element of Income Support.

OP, how long have you been on IB ? How much IB do you receive each week ? Are you just yourself or do you have a partner, savings, any other income ?

Does your partner work full time ? If not, what are their circumstances ?

Only ask because Income Support is a means tested benefit & they have to consider his circumstances as well as yours before they make their decision.

Couple Rate Personal Allowance - £102.75
Couple Rate Disability Premium - £39.85
    Carer Premium - £30.05
Total= £172.65 This is the applicable amount.

    less your IB - £91.40
    less his IB - ???? say £91.40

Balance due = NIL i.e. no entitlement to Income Support, assuming his IB is the same rate as yours, in which case it's a waste of time applying for Carer's Allowance. But if his IB is less than yours, then do the arithmetic & report back your findings.

  • You can't claim carers allowance if your on IB but you as you have an underlying entitlement you can claim the Income support premium of £30.05 as I get this for my son.
I'd rather regret the things I've done than regret the things I haven't done.

It's not as straightforward as that.

The OP has a partner who also receives IB, the rate of which we don't know. So none of us can say whether they'll qualify for Income Support or not.

  • he gets the same amount as me
