My housemate's loan is means tested I think, he gets extra money than me that he doesn't have to pay back. He had no issue at all with the process and he got his money at the same time I did.

I don't even know if I would be entitled to means tested stuff, I could never be bothered supplying all the extra info. They need p60's and everything I believe
  • A friend has also had this problem with money not coming through in time due to several administrative errors on the SLC side! The best thing to do is talk directly with them, explain the situation and they will often negotiate a reduced payment plan of about £50 every month or so. Not the best solution but better than nothing perhaps?

I actually tested the system this last year, a sort of mystery shopper if you will. Despite the way I'd set my application out to be complex, it was fully processed within 5 weeks. My application was done just before the June deadline. I know the methods used for assessments, so based on this, you would have to say that the OP either submitted late or did not submit all the documents that are asked for on the application.

Delays mainly applied to those who did not supply or applied late.

Completely wrong. I applied on the very first day applications were available in February of last year. I made a note of it in my diary and was sat in a particularly boring lecture. This was my 4th year and all my details were saved on the system. The process was maybe 15 minutes long, they had all the details and approved my application in a matter of weeks. They still paid my first installment 6 weeks late the following term.

So what was that date, as you have it written down?
  • are you seriously trying to say that you couldn't get an overdraft, credit card, sell something, borrow from a mate? to get through those first few weeks, I don't buy it for a minute ............

Ok, as there's been no reply, I'll go into the above statement.

Centralised SFE would not have been to blame for this if you were a 4th year, unless your local authority was one of those in the trial scheme which went in 2006. No other authorities went until November 2010. Obviously you've not confirmed the area you're from, so that cannot be confirmed.

To have been waiting since 'the first day' would have to indicate that your application itself was incomplete. This would've been communicated to you on the website, via email and also by post. That's an automated thing, so it wouldn't be human error.

The only other way you would have ended up at central SFE is if you originally applied for a 3 year course, and did not tell your authority that your course duration had changed. If that's the case, then it's your fault for not following the agreement you signed up to.

A non payment issue would be down to incorrect bank details, your university not confirming you are in attendance, or payments being blocked due to mail being returned to the SLC from the address you provided them with. In all these cases, it would again not be the fault of the SLC.

I will criticise them when they are wrong, but as you can see the reason for any delay in this case is more likely to be down to yourself or someone else, and not the SLC. Obviously if you wanted to provide more information, we can look again.
