Contents Claim Help

My home was broken into in January and I have an ongoing contents claim with my insurers, Aviva.

Among the items stolen were £80 in cash and a Radley handbag. The bag and money were both gifts, the bag from 2 years ago. I can't find any photos with the bag on and I have no photo of the cash which I was asked from by Ival (whom Aviva have passed the dealing of my claim to).

Ival have told me today that because I have no proof of the bag and cash I will be unable to claim for them - is this right?

Ask them how many "normal" insured people keep photos of their money!

I did - they were adamant that I have to prove I had £80 in the house. How on earth can I do that????

Can you show them a statement showing an atm withdrawal, or however you came to get the cash?

The £80 was a gift from my parents - I don't think that they specifically withdraw the exact amount out to give to me for Christmas. Would Ival accept a bank statement showing a withdrawal for a higher amount even though I was only given £80?

What can I do about the bag as my mom no longer has the receipt and if she was to get a duplicate bank statement then she would be out of pocket.

I have never had to deal with insurance before and it has been very frustrating. Not only have I had personal items stolen by some lowlife, but these people from Ival have been less than helpful.

Explaining the gift of the money and showing them the statement with the withdrawal in excess of the £80 should be acceptable, and could your mum get a copy receipt from the shop if she explains the circs?

She brought the bag in December 2008 so I don't know if they would have a copy of the receipt.

She is going to call her bank tomorrow to find out how much it will cost to get a duplicate statement.

Just so upset with being broken into in the first place and now all this hassle to get my things replaced.

    Thanks Quentin for your help.
  • IVAL are scum - been waiting since 18.12.10 for them to replace an oven; they make you jump through ring after ring and their customer service people will lie to you time and again; I got the impression they just want you to shut up and go away

    IVAL are indeed scum.

They do just lie to you - I mean lie completley and to your face. Its on the phone so there is unlikley to be any record. Try to record you phone calls if you can.

I've spent months trying to get my stuff back. Once you get it through the first part (accepting claim) it is even worse. They seem to stall for time constantly (literally not doing things so nothing gets done and you have to accept what sh*t they give you, but carefull mind - they lie and say they have done it)

For example our TV wasn't in stock in curries (vouchers offered) so we rang them and they said they would change it. They didn't (but didn't tell us they hadn't) untill we asked them 3 times, then they didn't give us enough to actually buy it. Told us they had changed it. Guess what! They hadn't.

    They are liers and cheaters.
