XP Laptop Slow to start up

Noticed over the last few days that my laptop is taking 10 minutes to power up rather than the normal 2 minutes or so.

Any advice please?

I tried PC Pitstop which suggested freeing up some disk space and defragmentation which I have tried but made no difference to power up.

Thanks

Mine has done this for some time. It's the anti virus software on this machine. I start up and go and make coffee. Have you just installed any new or upgraded anti virus etc?
  • have you checked for viruses/malware?

Have you installed anything new just before it started?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

At which point is it taking time? Usually these would be
    1 - BIOS/boot screen
2 - Windows XP logo screen
3 - Post logging in (i.e. waiting for desktop to appear)

3, the other 2 are very quick.

I guess you are using Norton AV on a Win XP machine. :rotfl:

In that case your pc will eventually grind to a halt. Get rid of norton and use freebie antivirus software such as AVG. Removing norton is not easy. Google for help - it took me three days to zap it.

Agree that AVG is superb. Make sure you go for AVGfree

not the paid-for version (which is more or less identical)

Nope, I'm using zone alarm. Cleaned up with Tuneup2006 which seemed to speed it up but now it's gone slow again and is not even loading the task bar and start up menu once I get past the XP Users log in page.
  • start
    run
    msconfig
    disable everything from starting up
manually start things up as you need them
    e.g. zone alarms
    cw
