Refused to Provide a Quote

I have posted before (so apologies) but will just do a brief summary.

My son had a minor accident in November. The car in front stopped and my son braked but scraped the car bumper. Repair for the other car came back as £212 and no damage to my son's car. People in the other car have put in a PI claim which is being contested by my son's insurance company. There have been assessors out to look at both cars.

My son's car insurance is due up later on this month and we have now had a letter from the insurance company saying that they are refusing to quote for insurance this year due to the accident. Does this mean that he has been refused insurance?

If he has been refused, how long do we have to say on the on-line quotes that he has been refused insurance? I know with accidents some say in the past 3 years and some say 5 years.

No time limit I'm afraid. So if they ask "have you EVER been refused insurance" then it applies FOREVER.

So does this mean that he has been refused insurance because they won't quote this year? If we hadn't asked how much it would be this year and just gone with someone else, then he wouldn't have been refused?

I did a comparison and it came out just under £2,000, then I put he had been refused insurance and it went up by £500. Sorry for sounding totally naive.

Refusing to quote is not the same as refusing to renew.

    Which has your son experienced?

The letter that we received from the broker says

Your current insurer XXX have refused to provide a quotation this year due to a claim you had on XX 2010.

Ask your broker if this is a refusal to "renew". (As a refusal to renew does usually need disclosing, but a refusal to quote does not)

If you have a letter that says "refusal to quote" don't ask them anything as “refusal to quote” doesn’t need to be declared.

If you start asking for clarification it can only get worse and you could easily talk yourself into an additional premium of £500 a year forever.

Thank you Vaio. I was not sure if it was a refusal for insurance but DH said he thought it was. Just don't want anyone to come back should another accident happen and them to say the the insurance is void as we haven't declared it.

My son had some changes to the new policy and wanted to put business travel onto it and more mileage due to a change of job, so asked for a quote. We then received this letter saying that they had refused to quote him this year.
  • Hello all.

Just wanted to comfirm a few details your people if they wanted to know. When i worked for an insurance broker the question that we asked was 'Have you had any insurance refused or cancelled?'

What this means is that if you have had an insurance policy cancelled and then made Void due to not disclosing information such as a claim or driving conviction, if you have then that is a refused policy. Which is what you must disclosed on any future policy.

However if the insurance company are just not offering a renewal quote then this dose not have to be disclosed to an insurance company or broker.

Please note this was just for my insurance broker others may have different meanings, so like vaio says just ask the insurance company for confirmation that they are just not offering a renewal quote.

Nah, what I said is stick with the "refused to quote” letter you have already, any further discussion can only make things worse.
