Do you know where I can source reliable (and preferably free!) P/E ratios for sectors?
I am specifically after the forward P/E for FTSE Techmark....
Thanks

I've got a plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel.

Click link below for sectors/indices
http://www.digitallook.com/dlmedia/investing/uk_shares/sectors_and_indices
Then in indices, just click whatever index wanted, e.g. for T1X:
Click FTSE techmark 100
Under financials, click "valuation" (to the right of income and efficiency)
Current p/e and forecast p/e are shown
For various sectors,
Go back to link above for indices/sectors
Click on "sectors" (to the right of indices)
Click on e.g. aerospace and defence sector
Click valuation
Current p/e and forecast p/e are shown
Useful to be able to assess the p/e of individual components in the index/sector, so click on "constituents" above the 1day and 6mth charts. Then view p/e values.
Think all of the above areas can be accessed directly but if not, it is free to register for the info.

Fantastic - thanks for that James, you are a star. I was able to get in directly.

When in a spreadsheet of components looking at p/e and market caps, might also be worth taking a look at heatmaps by price (just click between constituents and heatmap, top menu) and configuring by time period required. Taking T1X as an example, note substantial variation in p/e for the higher market caps that presumably have higher weighting in the index e.g. over 3yr, BAE -25% (current mcap £11B) whereas ARM +approx 600% (current mcap £8B) and then look at their respective p/e values too (8.4 and 64 respectively). Can ignore minnows (e.g. basket case T1X stocks such as biotech/pharma OXB, ASM, SKP).
Given such deviations of p/e and market cap, not really sure if a composite p/e of an index such as T1X can be a useful indicator. Could be different in a sector where market cap and p/e of components are better aligned perhaps. Other OPs may be able to comment better on this.

It's one of several measures I am using to assess value of a non-listed tech company. Obviously first choice comparables are those tech companies doing similar business. Unfortunately there aren't atually any direct matches, so it's a bit of a hotch-potch. This is giving me a sector benchmark which is a handy reference when writing up.
