Hi Moneysavers,

Our Culligan Waterside softener began leaking at the Collar

I fixed this, and then there was a leak from the Valve Cover
http://www.wrekinwatersofteners.co.uk/wrekinwatersofteners/final.asp?id=457

I bought a new valve cover and 'O' ring washer to fix this.

Now, there are no leaks. However, when I let the water in, the brine tank gradually fills up and, as the rotor turns, water intermittingly comes out of the drain pipe. This continues for 6-7 minutes.

Then, I get 'ERR 1'.

The motor, rotor and gears are all aligned and working in perfect harmony. As soon as the power is on, the rotor just turns and turns for 6-7 minutes (with water intermitingly going to the drain) and then "ERR 1" returns.

It is driving me crazy. My mom has a skin condition and needs the soft water.

The problem seems to be that the rotor is not getting into the HOME/READY position and it is telling the CPU this. The CPU is, thus, displaying ERR 1.

Any ideas?
Thank you

Sonny

  • Hi guys,

After hours of deliberation, we figured it out.

The black gear has to sit between 2 tiny sensors.

Seems to be working now even though there are a couple of minor leaks (drips).

Fingers crossed it gives us another 3 years of use without problems.

  • Hi Sonny

I have the Err1 and wondered what Sensor you refer to as needing to be by the black gear ?

Is the Sensor on the flat cable and linked to the underside of the motor / gear assembly ?

    Thanks

  • Hello Sonny,

I am facing the same problem with my water softener, and since you resolved it, I would like to ask you for some instructions on how to do it.

What do you mean when you say tiny sensors?
All I see around the gear are some arrows with letters S, R BW, etc.

Can you provide details on how to place the gear?

    Thanks.

As it was about 18 months ago I think Sonny may not be reading this anymore.
  • As you know, ERR1 is caused by the rotary valve not being able to find its "home" position. This is determined when the black drive gear is in the correct rotational position. There are 2 sensors attached to a small circuit board, a transmitter and a receiver. These must be located above and below the black drive gear so as to be able to detect holes in its edge, and hence its rotational position.

It's very common for one of these sensors to get bent out of alignment when refitting the valve.
