actually, best not running mbam and avira simultaneously, as you may well get a conflict whilst doing so.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

I'd backup your data, wipe the drive, reinstall windows, scan again, if clean, change your banking passwords
or you could try this
http://www.avira.com/en/support-download-antivir-boot-sector-repair-tool!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
As the last lot of scans appear to have run ok with no detections do I still need to run Combo-fix?
The only problem at the moment is Malwarebytes doesnt update on the user accounts but is fine on the Administrator?0 -
Why the need to reinstall & change bank passwords?0
-
Assuming it's not a false positive - It's a rootkit, that infects the master boot record, and steals passwords (probably not your bank, but better safe than sorry). While you could rewrite the mbr, the only clean way is to scrub everything and start again - which assuming you have the XP disc to hand is faster than scanning over and over again. Your system will probably run much faster as a result too.!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
What is a False Positive?
If we start again, does that mean we have to reload all the software? As I dont have all the discs for some of the programs we use?
Would it be safe to backup the data on to the E External Hard drive, as this originally had this warning on Avira only? If not what other method do you suggest?

[DETECTION] Contains code of the BOO/Sinowal.F boot sector virus
[NOTE] The boot sector was not written!
However on the last two Avira scans 1st in Safe mode & 2nd in normal there were no virus warnings at all? Plus none at all from Malwarebytes.
Have looked at the Avira boot sector repair tool, theres not much explanation on web site as to what the procedure is and what it actually does?
Sorry to seem thick but I'm tired & the thought of having to start all over again is daunting.0 -
If I do a backup before doing complete destructive format, how do I ensure the data I am backing up does not contain this BOO/Sinowal.F boot sector virus?
Also where is the best place to store the backup? As I said previously there had been a detection on the E External Hard drive- see below,
Boot sector 'E:\'
[DETECTION] Contains code of the BOO/Sinowal.F boot sector virus
[NOTE] The boot sector was not written!
but after running both Avira & Malwarbytes in safe mode both reports were clean, did them again this morning and they were clean?
Does this mean its safe to back up documents etc to the E external hard drive?
Also do I still really need to a complete destructive format?
It seems like a lot of work when both scans are now showing clear, esp as I'm not sure if Ive got all the necessary discs, fairly certain have XP disc got from Dell when 1st got PC?
Any advice would be really welcome?0 -
This is out of my experience, Olive, but I've found someone else who had a similar problem - this may be of help.
The suggested download is also recommended by the good guys over at MajorGeeks.com, so it's legit!

But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.0
