patman99, Youtube works on the iPad. YouTube is one of the default icons in fact. I've no idea how the videos are encoded, I'm sure Google knows though if you are interested.

There's a lot of what looks like jealousy on this thread - 'I can't have an iPad, so I'll try and convince myself it is useless!'. The problem is 'iPad is expensive', which is true.

Re: printing, I can't remember the last time I printed something at home. I'm not sure I ever have, I think I have only ever printed at work or university. I can't foresee ever needing needing to print stuff at home either. Anyway the iPad can print very easily via wireless to a new HP printer, if you want to print, so I don't get why people say 'iPad can't print!', unless it is jealousy again, that they can't have a fancy new printer.

Re: typing, I wouldn't like to type a long document on the iPad, not even with the keyboard you can get, ergonomically a proper desk and large monitor in the correct place and keyboard in the correct place. But I wouldn't want to use a laptop for this either, for the same reason, and many people are happy to type on laptops so I don't see how the iPad is so different.

Re: 'continuing to cost after purchase' I have no idea what this poster means, they don't cost a penny after purchase, unless you choose to buy software and accessories for it, but that is the same as for a computer. The only things I buy for mine are games, which tend to be £2.99 at the very most, most are 59p, games for my computer cost £10-£40, so iPad is much cheaper.

Re: does he need a laptop. No, as long as he can use your computer to sync the iPad to, and to do essays on.

btw, I dislike the Apple brand. it's so 'trendy'. It makes me think of irritating men with silly haircuts and silly trainers and silly clothes. Their shops are also irritating, again trying so hard to be 'trendy'. Steve Jobs has control issues, eg not allowing flash. But it doesn't follow that just because they are irritating that their products are not any good.

Edit: actually, I'd like a doberman, a Manchester Terrier, and an English Toy Terrier, that would be more interesting than 2x doberman. They are all black and tan and the same shape, they are just different sizes, and would match my current dog who is also back and tan. And yet I'm still not going to get another dog, but this does not mean I am not allowed to want one, imo.

Android tabs (sorry to gush on more about them!) may be an alternative though, if you decide to get him a tablet. Cheaper but could easily have all the gizmos/whirring things/flashing lights that he's looking for. Worth trying in the shop beforehand though, as many still prefer Apple's tab offerings. I'm hoping HTC will release an Android powered tab soon as they make brilliant smartphones.

not having flash support is not an error of the device, more an error of judgement on Apples part, and also there attempt at forceably changing a current standard faster than it should by making what is a fashion accessory, ipod/phone/pads by using HTML5 only.

To the OP question. and reading the answers. I think the money is better spent elsewhere and more education needed on wants and needs. I is possible a friend of his has got one for Christmas or Birthday and they are boasting about how great it is. Like someone said it is a giant iPhone with out phone capability. He will still need a computer with internet access to update and transfer music and otehr stuff to it via itunes

A laptop he has will do a better job of everything the iPad can do except look like an iPad.

Apple also bring out a new version every year so it will be obsolete and not fashionable within 12 months.

It's nice to hear a lot of reasoned advice from people who have never used an Ipad.

Everyone who has used my Ipad wants to buy one for themselves.
Everyone who has ever used a Windows netbook / laptop wants to through it out the window.

With no real expandability (until someone releases a USB adapter lead) you are stuck with what is basically a giant Ipod.

Yeah, and a swimming pool is just a big bath.
