Taking car for MOT

Hi everyone, I think I have posted this in the right place. My apologies if I haven't.

I have a classic car and the MOT ran out in November. I didn't re-MOT as it was being put away for the winter anyway but i'm now getting ready to get it out for the spring.

So there is no MOT and no tax. It has been insured but I know this is invalid as the car stands at the moment, my question is, am I legally allowed to drive the car to the MOT test centre? I'm sure I remember someone saying once that it is legal as long as it is only going to the test centre and is booked in but what about me not having any tax?

Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you!

As far as I am aware you can drive it to a MOT centre (ONLY) providing it is pre-booked. You need to check with your insurers because the one thing it must have is minimum of TP cover.

Hi, thank you for your reply. It has fully comprehensive classic car insurance, I also have 2 other cars (not classics) that both have fully comp too so hoping I should be covered somewhere on one of the policies lol. Will double check with my insurers though.

    Either...

The insurance is invalid because the car doesn’t have MOT and/or tax so you’ll have to get a trailer to take it to the MOT station

    Or

The insurance, tax & MOT are completely independent and the validity of any one is not affected by the status of the others

You choose (I’ll give you a clue….it’s not the first one)

That’s the insurance hopefully dealt with. As regards tax, you can drive it to & from a pre-booked MOT without tax

Thank you for your help. That's a weight off my mind and I can look forward to getting it back on the road. It's already been looked over and been told it will pass the MOT with flying colours so at least I know it's roadworthy and safe to be out on it's journey to the test centre!

It's worth checking it shows as insured on askmid before you drive it on the road.

Surely if he knows he has a valid policy that's irrelevant? My car isn't showing on ASKMID at the moment because I bought insurance for it yesterday after a week's gap.
