Rover 400 head gasket

Have owned this car for nearly 12 months and has been fine, recently started to leak water externaly and looks like its leaking around the front of the sump area, the engine oil is staying at the same level and the car is runnung fine.Any ideas as I know that they have a lot of problems with the head gaskets and just wondering where they blow and what the symptoms are.

  • I can remember replacing a core plug at some point of my life but cant remember if it was on one of my rovers.
If its a water leak and you have (roughly) identified where it's being lost, I dont think it should be the head gasket.
Have you had any overheating problems recently?

http://rangerovers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=27741 The red highlighted bit is a coreplug (wrong engine, ideas the same). Look roughly where the leaks coming form for something similar.

I removed mines after I identified it by puncturing with a screwdriver and a bit of manipulation. New one inserted using a socket that fitted inside the recess and chapped in lightly with a hammer.

I had a 420 that had a faulty water pump, was on the left on the engine and you can't miss it coming out.
Only found this out after it had led to head gasket failure!

Probably not gasket failure at this stage but you need to be on the case before it does become an issue.
  • OP - I would not drive the car until you have had the problem investigated and fixed.

Water Pumps are weak on old Rover's too, therefore, I'd have this checked, especially given how/where the water is leaking from.
