Redundancy and moving to non EU country

Options
Hi folks,

I am currently at risk and will be made redundant in beginning of 2011-12 tax year. I am planning to move to Asia immediately for some further study.

Would be grateful for your advise on following:
Can I continue to get child benefit if I live in Asia (there is no child benefit system in my destination country)?
Is there any tax benefit for becoming a student?
How do I settle my tax in the UK?
Do I need to make any contribution in state pension while I am away?

Best regards,
Preetyza

Why, are you not taking your children with you?

Also if you are studying abroad what would they give you tax benefit on, surely you have to be paying tax before they can reduce it?

I had to give up my claim to CB when I lived in Dubai 18-20 years ago. Hubby wasn't paying tax on his salary there, so the book had to be given back. We had one child at the time, had another one born there. When we moved back to the UK, I was in receipt of CB then.

Hey why not claim unemployment benefit or whatever they call it this week as well..if you're studying I am sure there are other beneifts you could claim.....

Jeez, as said this is exactly why this country is in the mess it is.

Why should anyone, and I include people who emigrate to the likes of Spain, Greece etc still claim benefits? If they dislike this country that much that they move away then all rights to pensions etc should cease.

    You're having a giraffe, right?
Is there any tax benefit for becoming a student?

    No.

However if you are a full time student within the UK (unlikely as you say you are moving to Asia), in all likelyhood you will not earn enough to fall within the tax system.
How do I settle my tax in the UK?

You call HMRC and they send you a form to fill in stating that you are leaving the UK.
Do I need to make any contribution in state pension while I am away?

You don't *need* to no, although if you plan on coming back to the UK later in life and wish to claim the state pension then it may be worth voluntarily paying NI contributions.

Failure to do so may affect your entitlement to the state pension in later life.
