Service charges and the law

How they treated you sounds disgraceful although I don't see they're doing anything wrong applying the service charge after the Tastecard discount has been knocked off.
Whether or not they deserve their tip for service is another matter - unless they've let you down in some way I'd pay at least 10% and only argue if you have a specific point to make about why their service was inadequate.
I know it's not easy and that a lot of places get sniffy about you not paying service but so long as you draw problems to their attention as they happen, they don't have cause to object if you refuse to pay the service at the end.Armchair shopper and cook - albeit with a ready meal on my lap and "plates of meat" in a foot spa!!!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -

am more than happy to leave a tip for good food/good service.
I will not be bullied into paying it.
For example..restaurant in USA..
first visit..nice waitress, couldnt do enough, good food etc, bill came for food and drinks only, left good tip on table for waitress.
Second visit..different waitress...bill came with food, drinks and service charge already added..!
Borrows pen..crossed out service charge.
Went to till to pay..
Till-"you crossed out the service charge sir"
me-"yes thats correct"
Till man walks away, has conversation with colleage then returns..
Till-" I dont think you can do that sir"
me-" I just did "
me-pays and leaves...
You gotta have balls..never leave anywhere feeling like you have been shafted.
I disagree. Waiters/Waitresses get paid so little in America because they have tips. There is no minimum wage and so basically the time they spent serving you was for pennies.
I follow one rule when eating in america, if I like the service I give them 20%. If I don't like the service then I give 10% and I won't go any lower.
One waitress in America was really friendly until she heard our accent. She assumed that because we were British, we wouldn't tip. She was uninterested and slow to fill our drinks. So we paid 10%. There was no way I would make her think she was correct but because she had that attitude she lost money.0
