Was a student last year can I get WTC?

I've just started a new temporary job working 40 hours per week and I'm over 25. I was wondering if anyone knows whether I'm eligible to apply for working tax credits.
I was a student last year and had no earnings between April 2009 and April 2010 aside from a SAAS maintenance grant so I was wondering if this would effect things seeing as the calculation is based on your previous years earnings? I have done the online HMRC tax credit calculator stating zero earnings and have done it with the SAAS grant in the "other income" section and each time it has come up with the same figure.
Also I'm wondering if my temporary worker status would have an impact upon making an application as I have no idea how long the work will last.
Anyone able to help?
Thanks.

Work needs to last for at least 4 weeks to qualify. Student income (apart from the adult dependants grant) isn't counted for WTC.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Thanks for replying. Do you know if it would be possible to get the application backdated to work start date if I find myself there for over 4 weeks?Debt: Started at £4780, now at £4190
