Some of the suggestions I have and can recommend - Sedum is great. Day lilys will give a great display and can be easily split once you get a sizeable clump.
I also have arum lilys which come back year after year and last longer than the day lily varieties, usually from late April through to July/August.0 -

Angeladavis, wow so much information, you really know your stuff, hopefully in about 20 years time I'll know a bit more too
I know exactly what you mean with regards to the high maintenance, sometimes I feel like by the time I've finished the weeding its time to start all over again!!
I actually did an RHS garden design qualification years ago as a second career so spent a lot of time looking at low maintenance gardening (which was my niche specialty in my area of London where people had huge long gardens but very little time to look after them).
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Hi Chella71,
Re the Day Lilllies, try this link for some information : http://www.ukdaylilies.co.uk/daylilyqa.htm
Mine were in the sunny spot of the garden but their spot was needed for my tomato growbags so I've moved them to a not so sunny spot so we shall see what happens this year.....0 -
In that case... You may as well go the whole hog and create a wildlife/Butterfly garden.

Buddelia's are brilliant. There's loads of different variities you can get now. Verbena bonariensis flowers for a long time and is popular with Butterflies too.
The trick with Perennials is plants lots of different ones, so there's always a few things flowering.
I'd consider fruit as well. Good for wildlife, little work, very pretty when in blossom and a few treats for the kids.0
