Get in touch with the car insurance if it's paid in advance (for the year) you'll be entitled to a refund, same as any house insurance.

    both me and sister sorting.

quite alot sorted so far. but TBH when taking stuff out that I would use again I felt like I was robbing her!

Yeah, I guess you would now but it's early days and I suppose it hasn't really sunk in.

When I read that I had a vision of a woman sitting on a cloud looking down at you saying "Well I'm not going to be using it again am I?"

Put it this way. if she was here and about to throw something out because she didn't need it anymore and you did, would she bin it or give it to you?

I took a wool blanket that was my nan's. When I get cold I wrap it around me and it's like she has her arms wrapped around me keeping me warm.

The items you keep will have her history and by keeping/using her things you are honouring her memory. Eventually, you'll smile when you use certain items because it will remind you of the time when..... Fond and happy memories are trapped in many items, they just get lost for a while because we no longer see the preson who used to own them which makes us sad.

I'm just a sentimental old fool I guess (old before my time in matters of loss) but my people are in my heart and mind and having things that belonged to them makes me feel that they know I haven't forgotten them.

I'm glad you have your sister to help you through this time.

    Take care,

    Poo

  • Hi,

One of the things I am stuck on is the phone. As I dialled through to 100 I assumed its a BT phone but apparently she left in 2006.

Dont think its a virginmedia phone as there is not another faceplate visable ( they dont use BT's AFAIK )

Dont want this to keep incurring a bill and not sure how I can trace? Any ideas?

Dont want the new residents to think they are getting a free phone!

( was just going to unscrew the faceplate and cut the wires if no other choice available :undecided)

That would be rather foolish, as it won't stop you still getting billed for the line rental. And it's illegal to damage BT's property.
    Dialled 150?
Also can you not track it from her bank statements, direct debits etc?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • cant trace - no statement.

and reconnecting the wires if you know the colours takes 2 mins so no damage!

    Cheque stubs, old bills?
    Dial 150.
You'd still be billed for the line rental even if you ripped the whole cable out...

  • Really sorry to hear of your loss but you are doing the right thing by getting all the loose ends tied up before the grief kicks in properly - it's exactly what i did when my father died. No-one who hasn't experienced such a loss can appreciate that often you tend to go in 'totally organised' mode. There's no shame in doing what you are doing, I reckon it's mother nature's way of helping us deal with these things.

Anyway, i can't add too much to what other people have suggested on a practical level apart from try and get a decent sized sturdy box and keep all relevant paperwork in it - it will amaze you how these bits of paper accumulate, seemingly from nowhere.

With regards to the meter readings, I also suggest taking a picture (maybe on your mobile?) of both the meter readings just in case there are 'problems' later on (this will be the council you will be dealing with, don't forget).

Good luck and any other help required don't hesitate to get back on here - lots of kind, helpful people on here.
