Hi, Was just wondering if someone could help me..
I have been on IS for 8 months, I have taken up studying to try and gain some qualifications and keep my mind occupied and applied to volunteer for a local charity.
However, I now live with my parents after mine and my fiance split, more for support than anything, They moved and I moved with them, I am very unhappy and miserable here with no friends etc. I would like to move back to where we left, However I know it isn't that easy to just up and move when on benefits.
My cousin will be moving back to the area and renting a 3 bed house, I was wondering if I Were to move in with her, how would our benefits be effected? She has also recently become a lone parent and studying.
There are some jobs I have seen in my old area that I would be perfect for due to experience, I need somewhere to live there first though before applying obviously so was wondering if we did move in together, What would happen money wise?
Thanks in advance.

Have you informed IS that you've moved in with your parents and have taken up studying?
Are you studying part-time, full-time?
What benefits is your cousin claiming?
In terms of money it really depends on your circumstances and that of your cousin. You wouldn't be classed as a couple so I would have thought that your benefits would be kept separate and therefore you'd still be able to claim what you currently are though it's worth speaking to an advisor.
Have you put your details in to the benefits calculators below to help you model different situations?

Hi and thank you for the replies.
IS know I am studying with the OU and they are also aware I currently live with parents.
I think my cousin claims IS and child tax and has child maintenance same as me. Though I will double check that.
Karen my mum would have my daughter for me as she is at home whilst my dad goes to work, plus she has a thing about childcare for some reason! I'd love to volunteer not only for the charity aspect but also the adult interaction and to make friends would be nice, I feel really isolated here at the moment.
Thank you for your replies, think I'll give my lone parent advisor a call and ask her too.
Thanks again.

Thanks for the link mrsmanda, I did try entitled to and it said we would have to pay some rent and council tax as we would be sharing with a non dependent, so going to give them a call.
thanks. 0
