Car stolen & recovered - insurance question

My car was stolen, found with smashed windows and removed ignition barrel. Very angry/upset. Not worth much but I can't afford to replace it. Insurance company tell me that I am liable to the £250 theft excess - even though car has been recovered. I had assumed that theft meant "gone or ever" when I took out the policy so wasn't worried about the high excess - but it annoys and upsets me that MY car is stolen and I HAVE to pay lots of money!!!! Police insisted on towing it away incurring £100+ charge. Just seems so unfair.

You are liable for the excess if you claim. You have the option of not claiming in which case you will have to pay the police towing charge and repairs but no excess and you avoid a claim on your record and loss of NCB.

Do the sums and see which is best

Also note that as it’s a low value car it’s pretty much guaranteed to be written off and your company might be one of those that ends the policy on a total loss payout so claim and you end up with no car, not much money after the excess is deducted from the payout, and losing the rest of your cover (but you still get to pay the whole premium)

I might be wrong but I’d put money on no claim and a back street repair being the best option
