Road tax question

If you buy a van say that was registered and taxed under the disabled scheme ie free tax disc but that was no longer going to be used as a disabled van you need to re classify it. . . Ok no problem with that but..
If the van is say in one county minus tax of course and the local tax office is in another county (about 60 miles from the van) would you be alllowed to drive the van back to your home which is about half way between the two or would you need to go and collect the paperwork, get to the tax office and then go back to get the van ? Meaning it is a whole day and about 100 plus miles.

The van will be MOT'd, insured etc but the only thing missing is the tax for about half a day or 30 miles.

I could do it by post but that would mean I could not move the van at all and I really can't afford a transporter for it as that is more then the train.. I am just trying to make life simpler..OR could I drive the van to the tax office and tax it on the day of buying it without any issue or problems ?

You need to have the vans tax class changed from disabled to PLG, and no you can't drive it until you do so, have been in the situation before, though you may not get caught on ANPR if it still shows as taxed, but you would commit the offence of non display.

It will take a few days to get he tax class changed, from my experience you won't leave the local DVLA office with a new tax disc even if you do turn up in the van, the logbook needs to go back to Swansea to have the tax class changed.

I have called the local office and they are 100% sure I will leave with a tax disc and I better had because other wise the brown stuff hits the fan.

I have also called the DVLA (head office I should have said) and they have said have also said it can be done in office.

  • You can get the new tax disc over the counter at local office (as long as you have correct paperwork - logbook/insurance/mot/money), but the new logbook will be produce by Swansea within 4 weeks.

Do not drive vehicle there, it's a common occurance for people to get fined for no valid tax in the local office's car parks!

It can be done by post if you send correct documents and cheque but obviously this takes time - up to a week normally.

  • When I got my Corsa it was classed as disabled. I drove it the 25 miles to the Edinburgh office and left with my new tax disc.
