I cant see a stub or a card (or anything which looks like its slotted in)
i am on the new machine now, via the hard wire, which I plugged into what is called (on the instructions) the gigabit LAN network. Its the only place the jack would fit.*** Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly ***

OK so it's just a wireless issue then. You are connected by ethernet.
The card fits on the inside of the tower, you can only see the backplate and connector from the rear. Is there maybe a separate detachable aerial to be fitted?
Should look like this below, with just backplate and aerial visible.
Can you find it via the instructions?

Wahoo! Teenage son returned home and got me on the wireless connection in minutes! I was using a WEP code where I should have been tyoping in a network key. Thank you all for your help, very much appreciated. It's recommended to use WPA2 security because WEP is easily crackable

A WEP code is a type of network key.
But you really should not use WEP at all as it's completely insecure-change it to WPA.No free lunch, and no free laptop
