After growing for a few years, my favourite winter squash (pumpkin-ish) is Crown Prince, the skin is a sort of grey/green/blue and the flesh orange - an excellent flavour for roasting or soups.
Butternut - have had good results with Avalon, Harrier and Hunter - but as the fruits form, place them up on a brick or flowerpot to keep them off the soil.
As for courgettes, which your opening post referred to, bog standard Zucchini does well for me, along with Defender; I tried the yellow varieties last year, but was disappointed - maybe it's the soil I have - clayish/alkaline - even though I dug in a good mound of compost/manure before I planted them out.
PS - thanks Primrose - will look out Sweet Dumpling.0
