LCD TV Help!

Wondering if anyone can help.. (Posting on behalf of my mum!)

My mum has a Technika LCD32 209V TV, which last night when she plugged it in will not turn on! However, there is a constant blue light flashing on the front. She has tried turning it off again, leaving off for 20 mins, the remote doesnt work and neither does the buttons on the side of the remote.

Have googled the TV and I cant find an answer to her problems although this seems like a common problem with it! The TV is only just over a year old so out of the gaurentee period, she bought it in Tesco Direct.

Anyone got any ideas or had a similar experience?

Thanks in advance xx

  • I had a similar problem with an lg 32".
I unplugged it from the mains and left it overnight. The next day it was fine and has been no trouble since. I'm guessing the software had got corrupted somehow and leaving it without power for 12 to 24 hours reset it.
It's a bit of a long shot, but might be worth a try.

There is no such thing as a 12 month guarantee for a TV. If its a fault thats a common one, as evidenced by many posts on forums about the same fault, it is a manufacturing defect and therefore covered for what is "the reasonable expected lifespan" of the device which in the case of TVs is 6 years. Also your contract is with Tesco not the manufacturer so its up to them to sort it out.

I usually carry a copy of this webpage when I go to take things back. Never failed me yet and resulted in many an embarrassed store manager when they've argued their "28 day guarantee then you have to send it back to the manufacturer" routine and phoned head office saying I have a copy of SOGA fact sheet:

  • Thanks for your suggestions, ill tell mum to leave it off for a day or two and see what happens. If all else fails, ill get her to speak to Tesco :) Thanks for the link Hammyman x

What do you mean by that? Of course there is such a thing as a 12 month guarantee for a TV.

Any manufacturer is perfectly entitled to apply a voluntary guarantee of any duration to their products.

The key point is that - whatever the duration of the maker's guarantee - it is an ~additional~ right, and cannot override your rights under the Sale of Goods Act to pursue the supplier (not the maker) if it does not perform adequately.

It is misleading to suggest that these two different types of consumer right cannot exist at the same time for a given purchase.

    Another Technika bites the dust....
Don't wait a day or two, if it's only just out of warranty take it back straightaway and argue the case. Tesco seems to have quite a good record with replacing TV's even though out of warranty, presumably because half the Technika's they sell seem to be DOA at around 12 months.
If they offer a refund instead then buy a decent brand.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thanks all - mum has contacted Tesco who are sending her a form and say she will either get 50% or 75% refund (Not sure how they decide!)
