Investing basics

I'm completely new to investing, and would like to get to grips with the basics and the different types of funds and ways to invest.

Are there any sites that anyone would recommend? Thanks

'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher

    https://www.share.com/a/index.html
You can set up a practice account with £15000 to play with and the site tracks this for you live against current values.
This gives you enough to practice with 5-6 funds across various sectors, so building a well balanced portfolio.
There is also plenty of advice on there too.

    This.

With investing, many consider that you have to be prepared to go the long haul.

If you are buying single stocks, most people reccomend that you dont buy less than say £1000 in any holding, given the fact that you will have trading costs of ~£10 per transaction.

Decide on your goals, do you wish to put in a lump sum into a fund, do you want to drip-invest over X amount of years, or do you want to try trading yourself?

If you invest in a fund, would you want income or accumulation units, and what sort of risk/reward would you be prepared to deal with?

A genuinely brilliant private investing blog that looks at a more slow and steady approach, but still with great advice whether you're looking for a 10-bagger or a good place to whack £50 a month, is Monevator.

I really, really like this site. And it's one of the few private investing sites thats UK based.
