moggylover wrote: »But what about cheese? Cheese grows mold over the surfaces that are in contact with air, and most of the bacteria that cause this are the very same bacteria that actually FORM cheese in the first instance. If you remove the mold from the outside (as they do before packing cheese) the inside remains in good and edible condition and as previously pointed out on the thread, it has matured and developed a better flavour.
Meat needs to be hung before use, the outside of that will often look black, dry and horrible before it is trimmed and jointed. Freshly killed meat lacks flavour and is rather tougher than hung meat because the hanging process allows time for the bacteria in the meat to start a putrefying process, especially in the muscles and tendons, that tenderises it and improves flavour.
The very best cures of bacon hang for a long time in dry, smokey conditions and that is exactly what gives it the flavour.
ETA: would you throw away a potato that has begun to sprout or wrinkle?
I'm afraid that we will have to agree to disagree. If I have items in my store cupboards or fridge that have been there so long that they begin to mould or look and smell unpleasant, I certainly won't be feeding my family or myself with those ingredients, if you do, that's fine, but I choose not to.0 -
Why would you go to Hungary ?
Oh here we go again..the spelling police are out in force !
As you will see I stated in my post that I would go hungry (though my original post had a spelling mistake in the word "hungry") , not go to hungry.....
But then I dont actually need to point that out to you do I ? Because you already knew exactly what I meant didnt you? You posted the wise crack :Why would you go to Hungary?
Just to attempt humour didnt you ? Pity it didnt work then isnt it :rotfl:dont ya just hate it when ya get it so wrong lmao:rotfl:
Oh dear.....The loopy one has gone :j0 -
Recently opened a tin of grapefruit 5 years out of date. It was perfectly ok. As for cheese, Brie is best served at room temperature when it can walk off the plate, and what about homemade produce. Jam as an example. Sugar is a preservative and I have eaten homemade jam years after making it. I must add though that is the exception as it got pushed to the back of the cupboard and forgotten. Normally it is too good and doesnt last long enough0

I think I've read somewhere that yoghurt can be frozen. Anyone tried it?Alice came to a fork in the road. "Which road do I take?" she asked. "Where do you want to go?" responded the Cheshire cat. "I don't know," Alice answered. "Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."

I have frozen it and used it for cooking, and made it into ice cream.0

You can.
However when you defrosted it might not be as nice as it will be more watery especailly if your home freezer is full with not much cold air circulating.
The slower the freezing process. You get bigger ice crystals forming. When defrosted these defrost and release water into the product.
So if you do, use small containers with thin walls and give it a stire every now and then.
If you have a ice cream maker, put it in that to freeze.
Though this is quite a bit of effort for a yoghurt.0 -
When something Goes off or Bad its part of a natural chemical process and like all chemical processes the correct conditions have to be present for it to happen. If you remove or interupt the chemical process you are preventing or slowing down something going bad.
i.e freezing, refridgerating, presserving.
There are many sure fire ways of telling if something is bad. Sight, Smell and Taste being just a small example.
If you treat each case on its own merits then you should not run across any problems.
I personnally have eaten Yogurts 3 months past their dates with no reduction in the quaility, on the other hand i have also had yogurts well before their dates that i have had to put in the bin.
This goes for most food stuffs, we have lost the ability to tell if something is bad or off because of the cottonwool wrapped world that we live in.
PEOPLE OF THE WORLD (cottonwool wrapped or otherwise) WAKE UP YOUR SENSES AND USE THEM THATS WHAT THEY ARE THEIR FOR.A penny saved is a penny earned.
The less you spend the more you have.0
