P87 - Reclaiming VAT on business expenses you paid for

Hi,

A friend told me about this, and the first thing that I did (of course!) was to check what Martin had to say about it! However, I haven't manage to find any mention of this on MSE.

So, it turns out that "If you're an employee or a director you might be able to get tax relief for business expenses you've paid for. These include the cost of professional fees or subscriptions, business travel and subsistence, tools and specialist clothing." You can find all the details here:

www. hmrc.gov.ac.uk /incometax/tax-allow-ees.htm

along with the P87 form that you need. I think it's awesome, if you have to spend for work but cannot get it refunded at work for some reason. (Of course, if your employer has refunded that expense, you cannot also get VAT back again - you'd be getting it back twice if you did.)

I hope this can make into a proper page on the website, and I would be keen to hear how it all works in practice, as well as what kind of expenses are reasonable to reclaim VAT on and which aren't. For example, are travel expenses for a job interview ok to reclaim VAT on?

Looking forward to hearing from you all! :)

PS. I am a HUGE fan of the website!!! :)

No as far as I know, but you can sometimes claim the whole lot back from the Jobcentre.

You can can claim for fuel/travel if you have to travel between sites as part of your job, and your employer pays less than 40p/mile. You cannot claim for traveling to and from work though.
