Insulation grants?

Hi all.

I'd like to know if my 86 year old nan is entitled to free cavity wall insulation from anywhere. She lives on her own in a 3 bedroom detached house and has had her heating on day and night throughout most of the winter due to lack of insulation.

She does not claim any benefits and her gas supplier is British Gas. I believe her electricity supplier is EDF Energy.

Lastly, although her loft does have insulation I believe it was fitted many years ago so it's probably no adequate. Would she be entitled to any discounts for new loft insulation? What size thickness do you recommend? I plan to replace the loft insulation for her myself.

If she is over 70 then she'll be classed as a priority customer and as such will get free CWI insulation provided that it is not classed as "above average" size (this could be due to how it was built originally, or due to any extensions) If it is above the standard excess meterage then she would have to pay the excess. Usually around £5 a metre.

Loft will also be free based on the criteria above, and also depending on the levels of insulation she already has. If she has more than 60mm then chances are she will have to pay a contribution towards it although some companies will allow up to 100mm existing for a full grant.

Based on the info the OP has given the lady would not qualify for warmfront

You have to be over 60 and receiving benefits, have a child under 16 and be receiving benefits or be registered disabled.

if shes over 60 and getting free council tax then she qualifies.
if she isnt, then she can certainly afford her own loft insulation. c200 quid.

The sheds are always doing deals of loft insulation at silly prices like a pound or 2 a roll (think they possibly get subsidised by energy suppliers?)
Don't worry about a grant for that, just wait for 1 of the deals and do it yourself.
    Current deals:

    Wickes £15 for 4 rolls

    B&Q - £1 a roll
