Be careful when looking at quotes though.... because this is fairly common for women of a certain age group they tend to actually get fairly good insurance quotes with 0 NCD as it is "assumed" that they have been a ND on "husbands" policy which is why they have 0 NCD. When they have 1 years NCD the premiums will often actually be higher than when they had 0 years and just received an introductory discount.

I havent seen the DL or Tesco renewal letters yet but I believe for people who earn the NCD as a ND will have 2 NCDs listed on their renewal docs in the future - the number of years earned as a ND and the number earned as the PH - it is anticipated that other insurers are only going to accept the 2nd figure and ignore the first.
