Rear washer not working.

Would this fail an MOT test? The wiper is working but the washer packed up months ago. This is on a hatchback. I ask because saloons do not have rear wash & wipe.

  • I am not sure about the MOT, but the solution is often really simple.

Check the pipe connections around the reservoir under the bonnet, then look at the connection at the back of the nozzle in the boot. More often than not, the pipe has just popped off along the way :)

I do not think it has to be working for a MOT.

Sometimes both back and front washers are supplied from the same reservoir and the draw off point for the rear is higher than that for the front.

I take it that you have checked the fluid level.?
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • I used to have a corsa where the rear washer would leak into the lining between the chassis and the boot lining everytime I used it (Learnt very quickly not to use it and never got round to getting it fixed.). It went through 2 MOT's and although they mentioned it it never failed.

Thanks for the replys everyone. Yes, there's plenty of fluid! I'll check the connections thoroughly but it's too dark now and I never get to park anywhere near my own house

'was an mot tester' being the key phrase here, if any tester failed my car on the rear wiper not working they would be hearing from the VOSA. a rear wiper does nor have to work, not is it tested for the MOT

  • As mr-accountant says it won't fail on a faulty rear wiper. Mine's not worked for years and has never failed an MOT.
