I would be very grateful for any help...
I've acquired an old desktop computer from work. All old stuff wiped off and so needed to start from scratch. Had an installlation CD which I've put in.
Now I need to install drivers. Went onto Dell website from laptop and started to download (one at a time as USB not very big) Tried to install on desktop but get a message along the lines of "not a valid application" (trying to recall from memory as I've switched it off in frustration)
Can anyone offer any advice, please? I don't know what to ask the 'search' facility.

I originally tried to download about 8 drivers, but my USB didn't have enough space. Tried one at a time by downloading the first one in the list, which threw up the message. Tried again, following the 'recommended order of download' with a different driver (the DSS) but still got same message.
I will try again. Thank you for replying0 -
download the network card driver first, then you can download the rest attached to a router.
post the machine you are talking about, and link to what you are downloading and trying to run.!!

XP? Have you already reinstalled the operating system?
I mean specifically, link to the dell website, what filename are you trying to run, which machine?
These?
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=&SystemID=PLX_PNT_P4_CEL_170L
download this
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R67150&SystemID=PLX_PNT_P4_CEL_170L&service!!!!!&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2834&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=0&libid=5&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=87106
r67150.exe, and run it.

I have installed XP. THe link you provided is correct, shall I down load the one you suggested?0

yes assuming the network card driver isn't installed already, (check in device manager)
once it's installed, you should be able to get it on the net to do the rest, assuming you have a router you can plug it into!!

:wall:I have done as you suggested and it said successfully installed. Tried to download the DSS again - plug in USB - right click on the file - run - and up comes the message "F:\R121089.EXE is not a valid Win32 application" - this is the same as before.
I have unplugged the cable from my old desktop and plugged it into the (new) work's computer
I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Thank you for your patience:o0 -
Is the new machine on the net, ie does Internet explorer work when you plug in the cable to the router. If so, download the drivers directly from the Dell website, and forget about the usb flash drive
Also install a virus scanner, eg
